Lawrence Woman Dies in I-495 Crash Wednesday

A two-vehicle rollover crash Wednesday morning on Interstate 495 southbound in Lawrence claimed the life of a Lawrence motorist.

Massachusetts State Police identified the victim as Sheila Ann Purpora, 44, of Lawrence. She was traveling in a 2005 Toyota Scion when her vehicle collided with a 2011 Toyota Tacoma pickup operated by a 65-year-old Amesbury man. As a result of the crash, near exit 42B, Winthrop Avenue, route 114, both vehicles rolled over. Purpora, who was ejected during the crash, was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene, state police said. The unidentified operator of the pickup was transported to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

“The cause of this crash remains under investigation with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. No charges have been filed at this time. Also assisting on scene was Lawrence Fire and EMS and a trooper assigned to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office,” a spokesperson said.

The two-car crash, which occurred around 7 a.m., Wednesday, temporarily closed two left lanes for at least two hours, according to state police.  Commuter traffic backed up into Haverhill.
