Police Charge Three with Using Car in Maple Ave. Assault

Three Haverhill residents, including a vehicle operator who allegedly drove at another group of individuals during an altercation in the Highlands neighborhood Thursday evening, are to be arraigned in Haverhill District Court on charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.

Leopoldo Cruz, 24, of 1 Water St., Haverhill; Krystal Clifford-Ward, 21, of 26 Laurel Ave., apartment 1, Haverhill; and Allison Williams, 24, of 78 Winona Ave., Haverhill, were arrested by Haverhill police between 6:49 and 10:08 p.m., Thursday, at 3 Maple Ave. Each was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury. Cruz was additionally charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, leaving the scene of personal injury, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. The three were leaving the scene of the altercation in a vehicle when several others involved were allegedly struck, according to Haverhill Deputy Police Chief Anthony L. Haugh.

“There was an altercation between individuals and, when they left the scene, a motor vehicle drove at other individuals involved,” Haugh told WHAV. Further details, including the number of injured, were not immediately available, pending arraignments Friday in Haverhill District Court.

According to a police arrest log, Cruz was also taken into custody earlier, at 5:42 p.m., on Lexington Avenue on a charge of carrying a dangerous weapon and possession of a class E drug.

A Haverhill man, arrested late Thursday night on a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, is due to appear in court.

Efrain Gonzalez, 20, of 123 Cogswell St., Haverhill, was arrested by Haverhill police at 11:45 p.m., Thursday, at home.

Earnie Mendez, 39, of Lawrence, was arrested by Haverhill detectives at 7:48 p.m., Thursday, on Chestnut St. He was charged with distribution of a class A drug and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
