The Haverhill School Committee is scheduled to continue discussions tonight on an anticipated search for a new assistant superintendent and an ongoing search for a permanent special education (SPED) director.
On the meeting agenda, committee Vice President Gail M. Sullivan has requested updates to her proposal to hold an exit interview for Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum Julie R. Kukenberger, who is expected to leave in July to become superintendent of the Scarborough, Maine school district. However, according to Superintendent James F. Scully as of the last committee meeting, Kukenberger was still in contract negotiation with that district. The committee’s discussion two weeks ago also raised the possibility of revised roles for the next assistant superintendent and other administrators as a way to reduce turnover in the Haverhill Public Schools’ central office.
In another item, Sullivan has requested an update to the search for a permanent SPED director. The administration posted the position two months ago to find a successor to Interim Director of Special Education Kyle Riley, who has held that position since last November. During their Feb. 25 meeting, Committeeman Sven A. Amirian raised concern over the district’s ability to hire the best candidate with a salary range comparable to neighboring states while maintaining “a balancing act” with the school budget.
