Nearly 40,000 Verizon workers are in the fifth day of a strike for a fair contract. For 10 months the company continued to demand concessions as the workers sought to maintain what they have.
Both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have joined workers on the picket lines. None of the Republican presidential contenders support the striking workers.
“All we want is our fair share. What we want the public to do is hold off buying any Verizon products until we get this thing resolved,” said IBEW’s Myles Calvey.
Calvey says even as Verizon tries to force workers to work for less, it’s swimming in billions of dollars’ profit.
“The magnitude of their wealth – AOL put themselves on the market. Verizon bought them and wrote a check for $4 billion in 43 days. And now they want to take it out on the backs of the wireline union workers who built everything that they have right now in the company.”

Scott Walker’s anti-union administration could respond as soon as Monday after a Dane County judge finalized a formal legal order declaring the anti-union ‘right to work’ law unconstitutional.
Judge William Faust says it violates the state constitution because it amounts to an illegal taking of services from unions. That’s because the law bars unions and employers from negotiating dues or fair share fees to be deducted from worker paychecks at workplaces represented by unions. Unions must represent all workers covered by collective bargaining agreements at a workplace where a majority of workers vote for a union – even workers who choose not to join the union.
The state of Wisconsin says it will file a request Monday morning to stay the ruling while it appeals the decision.
