Bernard J. “Mackie”McDonald, 89, World war II Navy Veteran

Bernard_McDonaldBernard J. “Mackie”McDonald, 89, of Haverhill, passed away April 1, at the VA Hospital in West Roxbury.

McDonald was a U.S Navy Veteran of World war II from 1943 to 1947. After completing his tour of duty he worked as an electronics technician. After relocating to Haverhill he worked as a maintenance worker for the former Bank of Boston until retirement. He was born in the Bronx, N.Y., on Nov. 1, 1926, son of the late Bernard and Mary (Mahoney) McDonald. He moved to Cambridge at an early age, where he attended schools including Cambridge High and Latin School. He moved to Haverhill in 1970. His hobbies and interests included going to flea markets and refurbishing furniture.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Theresa Jagneaux, James Dick, Kendra Comeau and her husband Richard Comeau all of Haverhill; George Dick and his wife Kathy Barrett-Dick of Derr,y N.H., and Carolyn Francis of Haverhill; great nieces and nephews, Rachael Comeau of Derry, N.H., Richard Comeau Jr, Tyler David, Kristina Graham, Tricia Dick, all of Haverhill, Michael Dick of Merrimac, Jessica Moody of Rochester, N.H., and Philip Dick, James Dick, and Amanda Dick, all of Saint Johnsbury Vt.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours Thursday, April 7, from 5 to 8 p.m., at H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St. Haverhill. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Friday, April 8th at 2 pm in Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill.
