Erma E. (Dow) Knox, 93, 1959 Mother of the Year

Erma E. (Dow) Knox, 93, of Haverhill, passed away March 29, at Holy Family Hospital at Merrimack Valley with family members present. She was the wife of the late Ghernot L. Knox.

Born in Mapleton, Maine, Sept. 8, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Thomas E. and Elizabeth (Carter) Dow. Knox was educated in Maine, and received her teaching certificate from Aroostook State Normal School, class of 1943. She began a meaningful 20-year career as an elementary school teacher in various communities including Haverhill and Londonderry, N.H. She was an active 72-year member of the First Baptist Church, Haverhill, serving in the Sunday School Department, Nursery, Christian Education Committee, Mary Martha Group, and was elected Mother of the Year in 1959. She was a member of the Women’s City Club of Haverhill and served as a member of the board of directors of Haverhill YMCA. She and her husband were one of the founding members of the OTSAGO tribe on Lake Winnipesaukee.

Knox is survived by her children Linda and her husband Rev. Dr. Howard W. Lawrence of Haverhill, Pamela and her husband Steven Irving of Newburyport, Sandra and her husband Phillip Comeau of Newburyport, Gary Knox and his wife Louise of Hampstead; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral Saturday, April 2, at 10:00 a.m., at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main St., Haverhill. Interment to follow at Linwood Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Donations in her name may be made to www.specialolympics.org.
