Three-Year-Old Drowns in West Newbury

An investigation is ongoing into the death of an unidentified three-year-old girl who was pulled from the water Sunday at Mill Pond in West Newbury.

Local firefighters, police and emergency medical personnel responded to a call for a critically injured young child, found unresponsive in the pond, according to West Newbury Fire Chief Michael Dwyer.

“Tragically, and despite the best efforts of our highly trained medical personnel, we later learned that the child did not survive,” Dwyer said in a statement. “Immediately after returning from the call, the entire fire crew was taken out of service, and the firefighters and ambulance crew underwent a critical incident debriefing protocol.”

Members of the Groveland Fire Department and Newbury/Byfield Fire Rescue provided mutual aid coverage for the West Newbury fire station. Further details have yet to be released.

“At this time, her death is not suspicious and remains under investigation by West Newbury police and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Essex District Attorney’s Office,” said Carrie Kimball-Monahan, spokesperson for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.
