YMCA Honors Late Fletcher Carter at May Event

Fletcher S. Carter died at age 83 in 2014.

The first annual Haverhill YMCA Legacy Event in May honors the late Fletcher S. Carter, the Y’s beloved program director who died at age 83 in 2014.

While at the Y, Fletcher was the boxing trainer and coach, director of the Junior Football League, ran the basketball and floor hockey programs and many other programs. He could not be beaten in ping pong, winning many handball tournaments at the Y.

Besides serving as program director at Haverhill YMCA, he also worked at Newburyport YMCA. Fletcher served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and retired as recreational officer for the Massachusetts Correctional Institution, Shirley. He graduated from Newburyport High School, class of 1949. and attended Brewster Academy, Wolfeboro, N.H., where he played basketball, football and track.

“Fletch,” as he was known, was also a member of the AMVETS Post 147 of Haverhill, New England Amateur Boxing Committee, Haverhill Touchdown Club and charter member of the Merrimack Valley Lodge of Elks #1586 IBPOE of W.

The YMCA Legacy Event takes place May 14, beginning at 5:30 p.m., at Bradford Country Club, 201 Chadwick Road, Haverhill. There will be a dinner, auction, recognition and more.
