Harbor Place Work Forces Partial Street Closing Next Week

Construction continues at the Harbor Place development downtown.

Utility service connections to the Harbor Place construction site in downtown Haverhill will prompt a daytime closure of Merrimack Street near White’s Corner next Tuesday.

The temporary closure affects through traffic, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 8, between the Herbert H. Goecke Memorial Parking Deck and Main Street. It allows National Grid to install utilities to Harbor Place buildings under construction, according to Haverhill Planning and Economic Development Director William Pillsbury Jr.

“Full access will be maintained to the (Goecke) parking garage and surface level parking throughout the day for normal use by all local businesses,” Pillsbury said in a statement to WHAV. “Pentucket Bank clients will be able to access the bank and drive thru window by entering through the parking deck traveling east, and utilizing the eastern most entrance (as an exit) to access the drive thru. Customers exiting the drive thru will do so by making a left turn onto Merrimack street and exiting to Main street.

Police details will be on site throughout the day as needed, Pillsbury added.

In recent weeks, construction crews have added exterior walls and windows to the main commercial and UMass Lowell satellite campus building. An adjacent 80-unit apartment building has also taken shape as part of the $65 million Harbor Place project at the eastern end of Merrimack Street. The complex replaces the former F.W. Woolworth building and several other buildings along the riverfront.
