Accomplishments by several Haverhill High School athletes in tournaments and other matches last weekend received recognition by school department leaders.
Haverhill High senior Jordan Loosian, co-captain and a four-year member of the Hillies wrestling team, “was the highlight of the 2016 MIAA Division 1 North Sectional meet on Saturday in Methuen,” according to Haverhill High Director of Athletics and Wellness Thomas E. O’Brien. In a memo Monday to Superintendent James F. Scully, O’Brien recognized Loosian, who has autism, received a special introduction at the meet prior to his match.
“Jordan Loosian has been an important member of the Haverhill High School wrestling program for the past four years. The senior has come to practice every day and worked as hard as anyone on the team. His effort and commitment have been second to none. As a result, his teammates and coaches elected him as one of the captains this year,” a statement read. “He has been a true inspiration to his classmates, team and coaches for the past four years and he will be missed.”
In a message to school committee members, Scully said Monday, events “that go unnoticed…center around the many parents, volunteers, fellow students and staff that are just always there to support our athletes.”
“Saturday I had the honor to sit with Tom O’Brien and his family to join the large following that was there all afternoon supporting our wrestlers and so thrilled to see Jordan’s success…to hear our National Anthem…and then to hear how Jordan was introduced was the highlight of another success that we should all be proud of,” Scully said. “There are many pieces to a successful school system and I believe… as do so many …that our successes are making a difference.”
Other accomplishments noted over the weekend by O’Brien included senior wrestlers Luc Chretien, Reese Millington and Jake Prescott each advancing to sectional finals. “Their runner-up finishes helped Haverhill to a seventh place finish in the event,” O’Brien added.
Among other Hillies sports, senior indoor track team member George Papoulis took home the state title in the 600-meter run at the MIAA All-State Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center on Sunday. Papoulis won with a time of 1:21.06, one second off the meet record, according to O’Brien. Also, senior swim team member Matthew Amedeo “led the way for the Hillies at the MIAA Division 1 Sectional Meet on Sunday.” The senior placed fourth in the 500 freestyle and was 12th in the 200 freestyle.
