fatty_walrusThe second annual Fatty Walrus Deep Freeze Challenge Fat Bike Race takes place Saturday from the Plug Pond recreation area near Winnekenni Park.

Races include the five-mile Timber Wolves and 10-mile Polar Bears. Registration begins at 9 a.m.

“This event will take place on the scenic trails of the Plug Pond Recreation Area of Haverhill, Mass. We’ve got great views, rolling fire roads, sweet single track, berms and woops, epic climbs and… a castle!” Organizers said.

The event counts toward the Polartec Winter Fat Bike Series and sponsored, in part, by Riverside Cycle of Haverhill and Haverhill Parks and Recreation Department. Standard registration is $25 if placed by 5 p.m., today, at https://www.bikereg.com/fatty-walrus-fat-bike-race-2 and $30 during the day of the race.

Racers must have, or purchase, an Eastern Fat Tire Association (EFTA) license, available by race or annually for a nominal fee.

Participants must be at least 14 years of age to participate and ride a fat bike throughout the Series—3.8 inch or bigger tires. If you don’t own a fat bike, Riverside will be at the event with demos on hand.
