Haverhill city leaders Tuesday will mark the completion of the new Elmo D’Alessandro Fleet Maintenance Garage for the Haverhill Police Department.
Mayor James J. Fiorentini will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the garage, 93 Downing Ave., “to celebrate the opening,” according to Chief of Staff David S. Van Dam. Workers are putting the finishing touches to the $1.2 million facility off Primrose Street and behind the Division of Public Works garage.
As WHAV reported last June, the project was funded by a $900,000 loan approved by the Haverhill City Council and using $325,000 from the D’Alessandro trust account for law enforcement purposes. At that time, Councilor Thomas J. Sullivan, who initiated a motion to name the new garage for D’Alessandro, said “someone who gives that amount of money certainly deserves some recognition for his benevolence.” Earlier, the trust account was also used for a new roof at the police headquarters.
