The city is prepared for a potentially significant snow storm forecast Saturday, according to Mayor James J. Fiorentinti.

Newly acquired snow removal equipment, including a front-end-mounted, nine foot cutting width snowblower and a new one ton truck plow “are ready to be deployed,” Fiorentini said in a statement Tuesday. The new equipment complements the city fleet 10 snow plows and eight sanders, in addition to 120 private contractor plows available if needed. The city has also installed two of more than 20 flashing blue lights to be used in a new snow emergency parking ban alert system at downtown intersections. Photographs released by the mayor’s office show the two new lights installed above the intersection of Washington Street and Washington Square where the recently-restored Christmas bell was mounted last month.

“I have asked our highway department to be ready for the potential storm coming this weekend. I want to make sure our streets are cleared and safe for our residents,” Fiorentini said

All the blue lights, according to Fiorentini, are hoped to be installed in the downtown snow emergency parking ban zone by the end of the winter. The zone is comprised of nine streets bounded by Main, White, Winter, Essex and Merrimack Streets. It also includes Emerson Street; Washington Street from Washington Square to the Comeau (County) bridge; River Street from Comeau Bridge to View Street; and Water Street from Main to Mill streets.
