City leaders and area legislators joined with leaders from two Haverhill congregations Sunday to observe the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday at a breakfast gathering.
Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini, Sen. Kathleen A. O’Connor Ives (D-Newburyport) and Congresswoman Niki Tsongas (D-Lowell) were among speakers participating at the 30th annual Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast, held jointly by Calvary Baptist Church and Universalist Unitarian Church.
“This continues to be an impactful and thoughtful community event that I look forward to each year,” O’Connor Ives said online.
Tsongas stopped in Haverhill as well as other area communities for events within the congressional district Sunday and Monday to commemorate King’s life and legacy. “It is an opportunity to remember the outstanding contributions Dr. King made to our country in the name of equality and to reflect on the progress we have made in the 50 years since the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” Tsongas said Monday on Facebook.
