Council Candidate Hobbs-Everett First to Seek School Seat

An unsuccessful Haverhill City Council candidate has emerged as another potential candidate for a soon-to-be vacant seat on the Haverhill School Committee.

Katrina Hobbs-Everett, as well as former School Committeeman Shaun P. Toohey formally submitted resumes Wednesday, according to City Clerk Linda L. Koutoulas. She told WHAV Thursday, contrary to information released during Tuesday’s city council meeting, former School Committeewoman Susan Danehy did not submit a resume to her office, but it is “not a requirement” either way.

“The council misspoke,” Koutoulas said, referring to information released by Councilor Thomas J. Sullivan, who said Danehy and Toohey had submitted resumes in hopes of being considered to fill the seat being vacated by Joseph J. Bevilacqua, who was elected last November to the city council..

Hobbs-Everett submitted a resume last November to Mayor James J. Fiorentini, committee chairman, according to the clerk’s office. As of Thursday morning, no other resumes were received. Koutoulas declined comment on whether others who expressed interest in the committee seat planned to do the same.

Sullivan publicly appealed to those interested in filling the school committee seat the next two years to “come out (tomorrow) and drop off resumes to the city clerk so we can move this process forward.” As WHAV has reported, others considering or asked to apply for the school committee vacancy include Danehy, former Haverhill High Classical Academy Dean Deborah Sasso-Flanagan and former Northern Essex Community College Trustee Chairman Joseph C. Edwards.

However, if tradition holds when it comes to filling a vacancy on the city council, a joint committee of the mayor, councilors and school committee members could chose Toohey, the next vote-getter who finished fourth in a race for three committee seats last November. They will meet in a workshop session at 6 p.m, Tuesday, at city hall to settle on a selection process.
