The start of a new year is also the time when many gardeners start planning for the upcoming growing season. The All-America Selections winners are a good place to start.

The All-America Selections Winners are tested nationally and chosen for their outstanding performance in home gardens across the country.

The 2016 winners include Geranium Brocade Cherry Night. It has large semi-double cherry pink flowers that stand out against the uniquely colored foliage. The leaves on this annual geranium are bronze with green margins.

The other 2016 national flower winner is Geranium Brocade Fire. The leaves on this annual geranium are bright green with a reddish-maroon center.

Salvia Summer Jewel Lavender performed well in the Southeast, heartland and Great Lakes regions. The spikes of dusty lavender flowers attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, while the seeds bring in the goldfinches.
