Evelyn M. (Brunell) Slavit, 91, Began Career in Shoe Industry

evelyn_slavitEvelyn M. (Brunell) Slavit, 91, wife of the late William “Red” Slavit, passed away Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Hannah Duston Nursing home surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Worcester, she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth Brunell. She attended Haverhill Public Schools. Slavit began her career in the local shoe industry before marrying and then devoted the rest of her time taking care of her family. With her husband Red, she raised nine children in Haverhill. She dedicated her life doing for others, caring for the less fortunate, feeding and sheltering animals with a selfless, unconditional love. She loved nature and wildlife. Daily she fed the birds and all helpless creatures.

Slavit leaves behind her children, Patricia M. Kvinlaug and her husband Hans of Bradford; Richard A. Slavit of Haverhill; Kathleen A. Smith of Dracut; Betty-Ann Slavit of Hampton, N.H.; James K. Slavit and his wife Marie of Haverhill; Timothy J. Slavit of East Kingston, N.H.; Donna M. Slavit of Rye, N.H. and Diann M. Slavit-Baylis of Topsfield; 16 Grandchildren and five Great Grandchildren; her sister, Elizabeth Villers of Haverhill; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son William J. Slavit Jr. and her brothers, Alfred, William and Ronald Smith.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours Sunday, Dec. 27, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St., Haverhill. Funeral services will begin Monday morning at 9, from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church, 110 Lincoln Ave., Haverhill at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.
