Proposed traffic flow improvements at a busy Bradford intersection go before the Haverhill City Council Tuesday night.
City Engineer John H. Pettis III is asking councilors to approve an ordinance setting “mandatory” turning lanes at the intersection of South Main and Salem streets. It calls for “right turn only” lanes at the intersection, from Salem Street westbound to South Main Street northbound and from South Main Street northbound to Salem Street eastbound. South Main Street southbound would have a “left turn only” lane to Salem Street eastbound. The plan, excluding the left-only onto Salem, has received approval from the Department of Transportation, which plans to modify its traffic control agreement with the city from the route 125 reconstruction project. Changes were also recommended by the council’s Traffic and Safety Committee.
“Just north of the intersection is South Green Street and the current design is causing conflicts for traffic coming from the left lane and wanting to turn right onto South Green Street,” Pettis said of the existing two-lane through traffic pattern on South Main northbound. “The requested designation matches the operation prior to the recently completed project.”
The Haverhill City Council meets at 7 p.m., Tuesday in Theodore A. Pelosi Jr. Council Chambers at Haverhill City Hall.
S Main St Northbound should go back to one lane. Cars are going to fast to cut off other cars. There is a funeral home and then school after that intersection and with people “jockeying” for position it is just inviting a problem.
Plus whats another five cars backed up to Academy Plaza.
I thought this project was going to help. Not sure who benefitted.

Main St northbound being reduced to one lane at the intersection will only make an even longer line of traffic backed up in Bradford during busy periods. Meanwhile, I think traffic turning right from Salem onto Main St northbound will still tend to think there’s two lanes available, which will continue to be a problem. Not sure any of this is an actual “solution”.
How about finally fixing the left turn arrow on water st. to south main st ? at times traffic is backed up to the fire station. How about the left turn from Ginty Blvd up to main st. ??? allowing only one or maybe two cars through is crazy. Who is running this city ? Oh wait….Capt. micromanage is on duty. Strike up the F-Troop song !!
Not sure but I think somebody has the intersection and directions confused.
