John Meredith Jackson, 79, Former W. Newbury Police Officer

john_jacksonJohn Meredith Jackson, 79, of Salem, N.H., and formerly of Haverhill, died early Wednesday morning, Nov. 4, at his residence.

He was born in Medford, July 30, 1936, son of the late Joseph W. and Ann (Stratton) Jackson. His family moved to Haverhill in 1938 and was educated in the Haverhill school system. Jackson’s family then moved to West Newbury in 1951 and he graduated from Newburyport High School, class of 1955. From 1955 to 1959 he served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Prior to serving in the Navy he was employed at Harrimans Market for three years. From 1959, until his retirement in 1989, he was employed as a program planner at the former AT&T, North Andover. He was employed as a police officer for the town of West Newbury from 1961 to 1963. Jackson was a member of the Massachusetts and New Hampshire Police Chiefs Association from 2000 thru 2007. He was also a former president and director of Merrimac Cemetery, West Newbury. He moved to Salem, N.H., in 1990 and while there was a member of Calvary Bible Church, Derry, N.H.

His survivors include his wife of 19 years, Kathryn M. (Kelley) Girroir-Jackson of Salem, N.H.; two daughters, Evelyn Ann Jackson-Cole of Salem, N.H., and Nicole Christine Curcio of Nashua, N.H.; a sister, Joanne Lee Baker of Acton; and four grandchildren. Jackson was the husband of the late Shirley Jeanne (Allard) Jackson ,who died in 1994.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation period Friday morning, Nov. 6, from 9:30 to 10:45 at H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill, followed by a Funeral Service at 11, at the Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Merrimac Cemetery, West Newbury.
