Effie (Pappas) Toulas, 101, Aunt of the Late Sen. Paul Tsongas

effie_toulasEffie (Pappas) Toulas, 101, of Haverhill, died Sunday night, Nov. 1, at Holy Family Hospital at Merrimack Valley, Haverhill.

She was born in Lowell, June 1, 1914, daughter of the late George and Xanthi (Lathas) Panagiotopoulos. Toulas was educated in the Haverhill school system. Prior to moving back to Haverhill in the 1970s, she resided in Reading, Penn., where she and her late husband owned and operated a restaurant. While in Haverhill they owned and operated a variety store. Toulas worked for many years at the Council of Aging in Haverhill. She was a longtime member of Holy Apostles Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, Haverhill. She was also very active in the daughters of Penelope and the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society.

She was the wife of the late James Toulas who died in 1988 and sister of the late Charles Pappas, Katrina Tsongas and aunt of the late Senator Paul Tsongas. Her survivors include a son, Dean Toulas of Boscawen, N.H.; a sister Liberty Tatarow of Haverhill; and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation Thursday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m., in Holy Apostles Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154-156 Winter St., Haverhill, followed by a funeral service at 11 in the church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. Arrangements are by the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Homes, Haverhill and Bradford.
