The Haverhill YWCA is undergoing renovation.

YWCA of Greater Lawrence Executive Director Mary O’Brien is working with staff members Sue Staples, Luis Martinez and Renee McGuire on a project to modernize 10 apartments at the 107 Winter St. location, according to an email from the organization.

The units provide “housing opportunities for low-income women—many of whom are likely to be survivors of domestic and sexual violence,” YWCA officials said.

O’Brien has also overseen Teresa DeJesus and her YWCA Emergency Women’s Shelter staff place more than 17 women and their families in affordable housing this year.

“The fact that we now operate a women’s emergency shelter really gives us the ability to take a woman from crisis toward the goal of safe, permanent housing. This year, between the Shelter and Fina House, we’ve actually been able to help over 23 women and their families find permanent, safe housing,” O’Brien said.

The YWCA of Greater Lawrence took over Haverhill operations several years ago.
