Community Action Set to Celebrate 50th Birthday in November

A newspaper article announces the birth of Community Action.

Haverhill-based anti-poverty services agency Community Action Inc. marks its 50th anniversary with a November celebration.

A fundraiser is set to take place at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 12, at Haverhill Country Club to “celebrate the people and community that have supported our mission to empower individuals and families to overcome poverty over the last half century.” The agency was founded as Haverhill’s contribution to then-President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “war on poverty.”

The celebration includes a raffle, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and dinner. It also features a live auction and special guests, including comedian and Humor for Humanity founder Jimmy Tingle, according to a statement.

Community Action Executive Director John Cuneo appears on WHAV’s Open Mike Show Monday, Oct. 19 to discuss the agency’s long history. Mark Sanborn, who will discuss heating assistance options for needy residents this winter, will join him.

“This event will look back at the accomplishments of the organization, bringing together those who were a part of our beginning and the many who strengthen it today,” a spokesperson said. “Merrimack Valley leaders, our board members, staff, corporate partners, supporters, elected officials and community members will join together to honor Community Action Inc.’s accomplishments.”

Tickets are $50 each.
