Antonio Matias, 94, Former Sabana Grande de Hostos Sheriff

MatiasAntonio Matias, 94, of Haverhill, husband of Fior Maria Matias, passed away Friday, Oct. 9, at Holy Family Hospital surrounded by his family.

Born in the Dominican Republic, he was the son of the late Celedonio and Mercedes (Rosario) Matias. He was raised and educated in Sabana Grande de Hostos, Dominican Republic. Matias was a business man for many years and also served as Sheriff for Sabana Grande de Hostos. He came to the United States in 1993 and settled in Haverhill. He liked to dance and loved home cooked food. Most important to him was spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Ismael Matias and his wife Maria of Haverhill; Parfino Matias and his wife Arelis of Haverhill; Victor Matias and his wife Teresa of Santo Domingo; Santiago Matias and his wife Milagros of Lawrence; Silfrido Matias; Jose Matias and his wife Juana of Haverhill; Nereida Brito and her husband Juan of Orlando, Fla.; Rosie Matias and Cristina Matias, both of Dominican Republic; sisters, Carmelita of Sabana Grande de Hostos; Anna Fortuna or Puerto Rico and Lidia Matias of Santo Domingo; 46 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son Arsenio Matias, his daughter Eunicis Matias and his sister Maria Matias.

Friends and family are invited to attend calling hours Monday, Oct. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St., Haverhill. Funeral services begin Tuesday morning at 9 from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. James Church, 185 Winter St., Haverhill. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery, 41 John Ward Avenue, Haverhill.
