Miriam Suvalle Shain, 99, Worked at Local Bloodmobiles

shainMiriam Suvalle Shain, 99, of Delray Beach, Fla., and Haverhill, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 4, at her home in Delray Beach.

Shain was born in Boston, Dec. 21, 1915, daughter of the late David and Rachel (Silberstein) Suvalle and the late Dora (Pollack) Suvalle. She was educated in the Newton school system and graduated from Newton High School with the class of 1933. As a child she loved Girl Scouting and dancing. When her children were young she was a Brownie leader and a Cub Scout den mother. She served as a Grey Lady for many years working at the local bloodmobiles. She was in her glory at her 99th birthday party in December, 2014, with everyone there to celebrate her life. She was an avid bowler and continued to bowl twice a week in Florida for many years. Her hobbies included playing Scrabble and playing cards, reading, and knitting and crocheting. She and her husband traveled extensively to Europe, Israel, the Far East, the Caribbean, and throughout the U.S. While in Alaska she enjoyed walking on a glacier. Her last adventure was white water rafting in Colorado with her girlfriend. Her many memberships included Temple Emanu-El, Haverhill, and Temple Sinai of Delray Beach, Fla., Hale Hospital Auxiliary, Sisterhood of Temple Emanu-El, Haverhill Jewish Scholarship Loan, B’Nai B’rith Amos Chapter, Boston, and the Ladies Rotary Club. She was a past president and life member of Hadassah. She was also a member of Haverhill Country Club for many years where she golfed with her husband.

She was predeceased by her husband Joseph, her sister Nathalie Rosenfield and her brother Harold Suvalle. She is survived by her son Steven M. Shain and his wife Carol of Jupiter, Fla., daughters Ruth A. Rood and her husband Shea of Marblehead, and Jill M. Carroll and her husband Winston of Haverhill,; grandchildren Steven Rood of Los Angeles, Calif.; Susan G. Joslin and her husband Douglas, of Amesbury; Jonathan B. Shain and his wife Maria, of Durham, N.C.; Ross P. Shain and his wife Jennifer of Rhinecliff, N.Y.; Dara L. Shain and her husband Matt Gocke, of Durham, N.C.; Danielle N. Carroll of Medford; and Winston B. Carroll III of Haverhill; great-grandchildren Noah and Spencer Joslin, Johanna Shain, Oona Shain, and Ila Gocke; as well as several nieces and nephews, and many cousins.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral service Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St. Haverhill. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon. A memorial observance will be held at her daughter Jill’s home in Haverhill, Wednesday, until 8 p.m., Thursday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and also at her daughter Ruth’s home in Marblehead, Saturday and Sunday, 6 to 8 p.m., both nights.
