Anna Sampson, 98, Regional Golf Champion

Anna_SampsonAnna Sampson, 98, passed in her home Wednesday, Sept. 9. She was a lifelong resident of Haverhill and widow of Leslie Sampson, her husband of more than 40 years.

Sampson worked at Western Electric for 35 years, but still had time to be a loving mother and truly avid golfer. She won many golf championships, most notable the Massachusetts Women’s Amateur in 1963. She also captured the State Senior title four times and the New England Senior Championship once in 1970. Along with her son Blaine, she won the Massachusetts Mother and Son five times. She also partnered for five Mass Curtis Bowl Titles. Sampson won many other tournaments, including several Club Championships at Haverhill Country Club, 24 in all. In 1981, she was greatly honored to have been inducted into the Haverhill Sports Hall of Fame. She continued golfing well into her 80s at Merrimack Valley Country Club, often with her friend Joseph Crocco.

She is survived by her son Blaine, grandson Derek Sampson, niece Arlene Forte of Scarborough, Maine, and several great nieces and nephews. She also leaves the late siblings, Olga Hannaford, Lillian Scimia and Hugo Conte. Funeral Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the H.L.
