Michael Dixon Murphy, 80, U.S. Army Veteran

Michael_MurphyMichael Dixon Murphy, 80, of Haverhill, husband of Mary (Duggan) Murphy, passed away Sunday, Aug. 23, at Wingate at Haverhill with his  family by his side.

Born in Minneapolis, Minn., he was the son of the late Ernest J. and Dorothy J. (Dixon) Murphy. He was a graduate of St. Thomas Military Academy in St. Paul, Minn., class of 1952. He continued his education at the University of Washington Seattle receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics. A Vietnam Era Veteran, Murphy proudly served in the United States Army being honorably discharged in 1964. Murphy was employed as a purchasing agent for the Ingersoll Rand Corporation in Niantic, Conn., retiring in 1990. A devoted husband, father and grandfather his family was the center of his life.

In addition to his  wife of 57 years, he leaves his children, Michael P. Murphy of Washington, D.C., Kevin B. Murphy and his wife Diana of Haverhill, Margaret Menotti and her husband Joseph of Uxbridge, Elizabeth McGrath and her husband James of Providence, R.I., and Dr. Kathleen Murphy and David Hutchins of Salem; a son-in-law, John Langwig of Somerville; 10 grandchildren, Celia Auditore, Genevive Auditore, Marguerite Langwig, Anthony Menotti, Christina Menotti, Caleigh McGrath, Maeve McGrath, Elena Murphy, Augusta Murphy and Michael Murphy; and brother, Dr. Daniel Murphy of Ventura, Calif. He was predeceased by his daughter Ann Langwig who passed away Oct. 4, 2014.

Friends and family are invited to his calling hours on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main Street, Haverhill. Funeral services and committal are private. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to Joslin Diabetes, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215.
