Shirley R. (Bakerman) Yanku, 85, worked at Mitchell’s and Grad’s

YankuShirley R. (Bakerman) Yanku, 85, of Haverhill, passed away Aug. 16, at Wingate of Haverhill.

She was born in Haverhill Sept. 12, 1929, daughter of the late Morris Bakerman, and Lena (Fiman) Bakerman. She was educated in the Haverhill school system and was a graduate of Haverhill High School, class of 1947. She worked at Mitchell’s and Grad’s department store for many years and also volunteered for the Red Cross and Merrimack Valley Hospital. She was past president of the Women’s City Club and a life member of Hadassah. She was a music lover, and also enjoyed cooking, reading and singing.

She is survived by her husband of more 61 years, Samuel. She leaves daughters Pamela Laufer and her husband Michael of Canton, and Jane Carroll and her husband Derek of Marblehead; six grandchildren, Amy Weintraub, Rachel and Aaron Laufer, Alyssa, Shelby and Davis Carroll; and one great-grandchild Matthew. She was preceded in death by a daughter Arlene Perham, her grandson Mark Wasserstein and her sister Janet Deitch.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her graveside service Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. in Children of Israel Cemetery, Middle Road, Haverhill. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Temple Emanuel of Haverhill, 514 Main St. Haverhill, Ma 01830 or Merrimack Valley Hospice House, 360 North Ave. Haverhill, MA 01830.
