Weather Delays National Night Out; Event Tonight

While greater Haverhill escaped the brunt of severe afternoon thunderstorms Tuesday, the weather did prompt Haverhill police to postpone their National Night Out gathering to Wednesday evening.

The annual family-oriented event bringing local residents and police together will be held at the same hours between 5 and 8 p.m. at Swasey Field, Blaisdell Street.

Meanwhile, the National Night Out observance in Methuen went on as scheduled, with events including rolling police visits to several neighborhood-oriented block parties, with appearances by the department’s k-9 “Duke” as well as McGruff the crime dog.

The closest damage reported by storm watchers Tuesday to the National Weather Service came from southern Essex County communities including Danvers and Peabody, as well as Billerica in Middlesex County. Hail measuring 0.75 inch in diameter was reported as close as Tewksbury.
