The son of a long-time Haverhill city councilor is mulling a run for the same seat.
Christopher C. Goudreault, son of the late Marjorie E. Goudreault, took out nomination papers for election to the city council July 23. Goudreault is also the nephew of incumbent City Councilor William H. Ryan.
Goudreault, 11 East Broadway, became active in local politics this year when he opposed a special permit to allow a 10-vehicle sales lot at 7-9 East Broadway. His neighbor, Devon Tucker, operator of Ideal Service Center, petitioned for approval. Goudreault’s mother, who passed away in 2005, served many terms on the Haverhill City Council and began her political career on the Haverhill School Committee.
The Haverhill City Clerk’s office remains open one hour later Tuesday to receive completed nomination papers.
Conte Adds Name to Contested School Committee Race

On the school committee side, Pamela Conte took out nomination papers last week to enter the already highly contested race. Conte, 72 Greenlawn Ave., appeared at school committee meetings this spring, challenging the disparate treatment of Advanced Placement and Early College students at the high school.
With only 18 candidates for nine city council seats, a Sept. 22 preliminary election depends on whether all seven candidates for school committee return completed nomination papers.
Three of the school committee’s six seats are up for election. Two-term Committeewoman Susan D. Danehy is not seeking re-election. Incumbents are Scott W. Wood Jr. and Shaun P. Toohey. Others who have taken out papers are former School Committeewoman Kerry Fitzgerald, unsuccessful 2013 candidate Gail M. Sullivan, former City Councilor Sven A. Amirian and newcomer Michael Shurman,
All nine incumbent city councilors have taken out nomination papers. These are Melinda E. Barrett, Colin F. LePage, William J. Macek, Michael S. McGonagle, John A. Michitson, Mary Ellen Daly O’Brien, Robert H. Scatamacchia, Thomas Sullivan, and William H. Ryan. Besides Goudreault, challengers include former councilors David E. Hall, Michael Hart and Kenneth E. Quimby Jr., School Committeeman Joseph J. Bevilacqua, Raul Diaz, Katrina Everett, Fred A. Simmons and Andy Vargas.
