Two new appointments this week by the Haverhill Public Schools bring a change at the helm of the Hunking Middle School.
Superintendent of Schools James F. Scully Tuesday appointed three-year Hunking Principal Jared Fulgoni as the school district’s new director of strategy and accountability. Wednesday, Scully announced the hiring of Shannon Nolan, most recently assistant principal at Salisbury Elementary School, as the new principal at Hunking School. Fulgoni, a former member of the State Accountability Task Force for the State of New Hampshire, will be responsible for monitoring compliance issues, monitoring, securing and distributing close to two million dollars in Title I funds, along with handling $15 million of special education funds, according to a statement.
“Jared joined us in August, 2012, and served as the principal of Hunking School. He has been working hand-in-hand with me in both the planning and management of the new Hunking School,” Scully said. “In addition to that, on occasion he has represented me at various meetings relevant to student learning environments in urban districts.”
Fulgoni has also been recognized by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the New York Commissioner of Education for his success in student academic achievement in middle schools, Scully said.
“Most importantly in this coming school year there are two major issues we will face. One is the management and structuring of services with children of special needs and the delivery of services to our children that qualify under the Title I Programs,” Scully added. “Our regular education budget has many demands on it, and thus we need to work aggressively to coordinate strategies to maximize our resources within allowable state and federal guidelines. I am confident that Jared will assist me in tightening up the management and accountability factors in both programs and ensuring that the children in our schools receive the services they deserve.”
Nolan was selected to succeed Fulgoni at the Hunking after “an extensive interview process” and recommended by Assistant Superintendent Julie Kukenberger and her interview teams. Nolan is a graduate of Keene State College where she received her masters in Education and her Certificate of Graduate Studies at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, N.H. Prior to working in Salisbury, she spent the bulk of her career in the Triton Regional School District where she taught both regular and special education and also served as coordinator for the district behavioral program and as a data coach.
“She is a very successful and passionate individual who has a record marked with integrity and a vision that will maintain the course for success for the Hunking School as that school takes on a whole new phase in the upcoming years,” Scully said. “Shannon has high expectations and demands results. In my opinion, that is a crucial ingredient that we owe our children, and we should expect nothing less.”
Ongoing construction of a new $61.5 million Hunking School will transform the existing middle school to a grades K to 8 facility for about 1,000 students in the Bradford section of the city.
