Haverhill city councilors are being asked Tuesday night to approve $75,600 in transfers to make infrastructure repairs, including energy upgrades at city hall as well as sidewalk upgrades at Haverhill High School.

Mayor James J. Fiorentini has requested the council approve a $66,099.73 transfer to close out the last fiscal year’s Reserve for Capital Projects account to the current Capital Projects accounts. Items listed include $12,000 in repairs to the concrete stairway at the city hall parking lot, $20,489.39 in energy upgrades to city hall and repair a city council office air conditioner for $1,556.61. A total $32,053.73 would be used toward sidewalk, curbing and other concrete repairs for “safety improvements to the sidewalk and walkway at Haverhill High School.”

In addition to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Superintendent James F. Scully told WHAV elevations of curbing and concrete decking at the main building entrance have become uneven since high school renovations were completed in 2010.

“It’s a hazard, because of this separation and therefore difficult for people, who may be on crutches, wheelchairs, etc., to navigate. In that respect, that’s why these funds were put forth and to have that area repaired and a couple other small spots where we have to be ADA compliant and we’re not,” Scully said.

A lengthy high school facililty renovation project, including updated science labs, heating and ventilation systems and a redesigned access road and main parking lot, was completed in 2010.

Also among the transfer requests, $9,500 in the current fiscal year’s Capital account would be used for sprinkler system repairs and upgrades at the Haverhill police station on Bailey Boulevard.

The Haverhill city council meets at 7 p.m., Tuesday, in council chambers at Haverhill City Hall.

  1. Sprinkler system repairs are for a system that was RECALLED FOR DEFECTS back in 2001. So this building has been at risk since the day it was built. And NOBODY in the city and it’s leadership did anything about it. Can you imagine if a business has a faulty sprinkler system ? Would the city allow them to operate without fixing it ? The incompetence is unmatched.
