A Methuen man is facing burglary and theft charges while Methuen police seek a second suspect in connection with multiple car breaks early Tuesday morning.
Methuen police arrested Javier Richards, 32, of Methuen after an officer responded to reports of two men with flashlights looking into cars parked on Tudor Street, according to Methuen Police Chief Joseph Solomon. As the officer approached, one man fled, but the officer was able to secure and detain Richards. Officers located a backpack containing books, a camera, and other items in proximity to where the two suspects were standing. After speaking with residents, police determined that at least five cars had been broken into during the early morning hours and that items were missing from at least one vehicle.
“This is a fine example of police, working in the early morning hours and responding aggressively to a report of a crime in progress,” Solomon said. “I am pleased that the stolen property has been returned to its rightful owners, and hopefully our actions have set an example for those who seek to victimize our residents.”
Richards was to be arraigned in Lawrence District Court on five counts of breaking and entering into a motor vehicle to commit a felony, possession of burglarious tools, larceny of property over $250 and larceny of property under $250.
