John McHale, 56, Retired Haverhill Postal Worker

John McHale, 56, of Haverhill and formerly of Lowell, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 7, at Lawrence General Hospital.

He was born in Lowell, son of Judith (Keohane) McHale of Hudson, N.H., and the late John “Jack” McHale. Educated in Lowell, McHale graduated from UMass Lowell in 1980. While there he was a member of the baseball team and team captain his senior year. He retired in 2013 from the United States Post Office, Haverhill, after 33 years of service. Upon his retirement he was employed as a security guard at Northern Essex Community College. He was also a longtime assistant coach for the Haverhill High baseball team, and ran the Boston Marathon in 1995 and 1996.

Besides his mother, his survivors include his wife and best friend of 31 years, Marcy (Ash) McHale of Haverhill; two daughters, Emily Gorski and her husband Dan of Haverhill and Becky McHale of Haverhill; two brothers, James McHale and his wife Suzanne of Pelham, N.H., and Daniel McHale and his wife Colleen of Dracut; two sisters, Mary Dowling and her husband Dave of Hudson, N.H., and Ann Marie Tierney and her husband Tom of Hudson, N.H.; granddaughter, Ava Gorski of Haverhill; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Adele and Melvin Ash of Haverhill; brother in-law Peter Ash and his wife Lisa of Andover; sister in-law Lisa Greenlaw and her husband Don of Woodstock, N.H.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his calling hours Monday, July, 13, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Bradford Funeral home, 210 South Main St., Bradford. His funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday morning, July 14, at 11, in Sacred Hearts Church, 165 South Main St., Bradford. Please meet directly at the church.
