State Police Seize Heroin, Pistol and Cash During Haverhill Traffic Stop

Massachusetts State Police made two arrests and seized 24.5 grams of heroin, a pistol and $22,000 cash Friday during a routine traffic stop in Haverhill.

Joseph A. Roberts, 23, of Middleton, N.H., and Michael R. Griffin, 23, of Dover, N.H., were arrested after Trooper Patrick McCrave stopped a Chrysler 300 on Interstate 495 southbound for a motor vehicle violation at about 5:30 p.m. Griffin, a passenger, was found to be in illegal, unlicensed possession of Taurus 9mm pistol, and 24.5 grams of heroin. He was charged with possession of a firearm without a firearm identification card and trafficking in heroin/morphine/opium. He is being held on $250,000 bail, pending his arraignment in Haverhill District Court.

“Both men were found to be in possession of nearly $22,000 in U.S. currency. The currency was found to be bundled consistent with sales or purchase of narcotics, wrapped in bundles,” police said.

Roberts was charged with speeding, driving a motor vehicle after license suspension or revocation. He was released on personal recognizance pending his arraignment in Haverhill District Court.

The investigation was conducted by McCrave, of the State Police Newbury Barracks, and Trooper Michael Caranfa.
