Patricia J. (McLaughlin) George, 83, Former Newspaper Assistant

Patricia J. (McLaughlin) George, 83, a native and lifelong resident of Haverhill, died Sunday evening, June 21, at Merrimack Valley Hospice House, surrounded by her family.

The daughter of the late Edward P. and Albina M. (Lamoureux) McLaughlin, she attended the Ayers Village School and was a member of the Haverhill High School class of 1950. Raised in the Ayers Village section of the city, George enjoyed growing up near Crystal Lake, spending her summers swimming and horseback riding.

George was employed for many years at the Haverhill Gazette and later Haverhill Independent as a journalist’s assistant. She later worked in the cafeteria at the Tilton School and as an elections poll worker for the City of Haverhill.

George was a member of All Saints Parish of Haverhill and enjoyed reading and spending time with her family and friends at her summer home at Salisbury Beach. She was also an avid bowler and member of a league at Saint Joseph Bowling Lanes for many years and maintained her strong friendships with many of her high school classmates and friends.

She was the wife of the late Joseph A. George, to whom she was married for 50 years at the time of his death in 2005. She leaves her son and daughter-in-law, David E. and Nicole N. George of Salem, N.H.; grandchildren, Gavin D. George and Lillian G. George of Salem; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother Edward J. McLaughlin.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her life celebration Thursday, June 25, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, 47 Broadway, Haverhill. Her funeral is Friday morning at 9 from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., All Saints Church, 120 Bellevue Ave., Haverhill. Burial follows in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery, Haverhill. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Joslin Diabetes Center, One Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215.
