Mary (Bousnakis) Leavitt, 81, Began Career at Hale Hospital

Mary (Bousnakis) Leavitt, 81, a lifelong resident of Haverhill passed away on the morning of June 21 at Merrimack Valley Hospice House, Haverhill, surrounded by her  family.

Born and educated in Haverhill she was the daughter of the late Peter and Amelia (Malerelis) Bousnakis. She attended Haverhill public schools and was a graduate of Haverhill High School, class of 1951.

She began her career as an x-ray technician at the former Hale Hospital in Haverhill for several years before raising her family. Leavitt loved knitting scarfs and hats for her whole family and cherished the times spent with her family. She loved cooking, entertaining  and going to the beach. She spent many years with her family at Seabrook Beach. An avid sports fan, she was knowledgeable in most sports especially football. In her spare time she enjoyed golfing, taking up the game at age 71. She played many local courses for the past 10 years.

The widow of Donald E. Leavitt, who died this past January, she is survived by her loving children, Stephen M. Leavitt and his wife Jacqueline of Newburyport and Donna M. Sexton and her husband, Wayne D. of Bradford; six cherished grandchildren, Jacquelyn, Casey, David and Michael Sexton and Daniel and Matthew Leavitt; her great-grandson, Brogan and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her daughter and son in laws niece and nephew, Jessica and Donald Sexton both of Plaistow, N.H., who held a special place in her heart. She was predeceased by her brothers, Gregory and Manny Bousnakis and a sister Irene Valaskatgis.

Friends and family are  invited to call Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main Street, Haverhill. Funeral services begin Thursday morning at 10 from the funeral home with a funeral mass to be celebrated at 11 a.m. at Holy Apostles Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, Winter Street, Haverhill. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery, Mill Street, Haverhill. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Make A Wish Foundation, 1 Bulfinch Pl #201, Boston, MA 02114.
