Anthony W. Warchut, 97, of Haverhill, died Friday morning while tending to his garden, from which he received such a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.
Born in Lawrence, April 18, 1918, he was the son of the late Frank and Lucy (Galuska) Warchut and was a veteran of World war II, serving with the United States Army Air Corps from from April 9, 1942 until his honorable discharge Dec. 5, 1945 with the rank of sergeant. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal and the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon. He was a marine machinist, having worked at the Boston Naval Shipyard as well as the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard and was a member of the National Federation of Federal Employees (NARFE). As an avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed being a member of the Haverhill Rod and Gun Club, and had also been a longtime parishioner of St. Rita’s Parish and later continued to practice his faith at All Saints Parish in Haverhill. He also volunteered much of his time at the former Glynn Memorial Nursing Home in Haverhill.
He was the husband of the late Eleanor (Gardella) Warchut who died in 2005; father of Anthony Warchut and wife Christina of Manchester, Conn.; grandfather of Katherine Warchut and Andrew Warchut and wife Rebecca; and great-grandfather of Lowry and Athena. He also leaves behind a brother, Stephen Warchol of Bradford; a nephew, Robert Nalezinski; and his Godchild, Joan Gaucher of Seabrook, N.H. He was predeceased by sisters, Ann Nalezinski and Mary Glod and two brothers, Joseph and Walter Warchut.
Visiting hours at the Monument Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family-Carnevale Funeral Home, 334 Main Street, Haverhill, are Tuesday, June 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday morning at 11, at All Saint’s Church, 120 Bellevue Ave., followed by interment in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Haverhill. Instead of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to All Saints Parish, 120 Bellevue Ave., Havehrill, MA 01832 or to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, Post office Box 515, Northampton, MA 01061-0515.
