Mary Thayer, 91, Library Friends’ Shop Volunteer

Mary Thayer, 91, widow of Richard Thayer, passed away May 30 at Penacook Place, Haverhill.

Thayer was born March 27, 1924 in Framingham, the daughter of the late Harry Z. Stone and Marion (Copp) Stone. She was a member of Sacred Hearts Church in Bradford and for many years volunteered at the Church’s SERVE program, an offshoot of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

For most of her working life, she was an office manager, first for the American Optical Company and later for her husband Richard’s company, General Opthalmic. She was a member of the Friends of the Haverhill Public Library and up until a few months before her death, continued to volunteer at the library’s gift shop. She was also a member of the Women’s City Club of Haverhill and a longtime supporter of the Friends of Bill W. In addition, Thayer was a talented needlewoman who spent much of her spare time knitting beautiful afghans, scarves and hats for friends and family.

She is survived by her nephews, William Stone and wife Marie of Gales Ferry, Conn., James Stone and wife Cynthia of Rutland, Vt., Mark Stone and wife Donna of Haverhill; niece Rosemary Michaud of Charleston, S.C.; five great-nieces and nephews; eight great-great nieces and nephews; and many friends in Haverhill, other parts of the United States and in England, who valued her unfailing loyalty, sharp mind and wonderful sense of humor.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 6, in Sacred Hearts Church, Bradford at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements by Driscoll Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 309 So. Main Street, Haverhill. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mary’s memory to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Sacred Hearts Parish, 48 So. Chestnut Street, Bradford, MA 01835.
