City Council Delays Acceptance of Bonin Drive as Public Way

City Councilor Michael S. McGonagle.

Haverhill city councilors delayed action by at least one week on a petition to accept Bonin Drive, containing a long-completed subdivision, as a public way.

The council Tuesday night unanimously supported a motion from Councilor Michael S. McGonagle to postpone the matter for further discussion on road conditions in that neighborhood with City Engineer John H. Pettis III. McGonagle noted Pettis was unable to attend the meeting.

“I just have a couple of questions about the roadway up in that area. I’d like John to have a chance to come before us and just make me feel more comfortable about the condition of that road,” McGonagle said.

The motion to delay the acceptance was seconded by Councilor William J. Macek.

Pettis and Economic Development and Planning Director William Pillsbury Jr. are among those giving a favorable recommendation to the Bonin Drive acceptance petition. A subdivision within Bonin Drive, off Pilgrim Road, was created in 1985 and has since been completed. But the acceptance motion had not been forwarded by the city engineer until now, according to minutes of the May 13 Haverhill Planning Board meeting.
