Claire (Demiris) Mavrofrides, 91, Former Western Electric Worker

Claire (Demiris) Mavrofrides, 91, of Atkinson, N.H., formerly of Haverhill, died Thursday, May 21 in the presence of her  family.

She was born in Haverhill, Sept. 2, 1923, daughter of the late Milton and Katerina (Zarbolias) Demiris. She attended the former Wingate Elementary School, Tilton School and Haverhill High School. Additionally, she graduated from the former Greek American School on Locust Street. Mavrofrides was proud of her Greek heritage and was very active in the Holy Apostles Saints Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church. She was a member of the Greek PTA and the Holy Apostles Ladies Philoptochos Society ELPIS, and was very active in church activities and Greek festivals. Mavrofrides was also a Cub Scout leader and a junior GOYA advisor. She worked at the former Western Electric Co., Haverhill, as a supervisor from 1945 to 1947 and retired to become a homemaker to her two children Evelyn Wrobel and Dennis Mavrofrides. Throughout her years living in Haverhill, she participated in many clubs and activities including Tilton School PTA where she was the corresponding secretary and historian, Haverhill Women’s City Club, 26-year member of the Arts and Crafts Society of Haverhill, Don Orione Advisory Board and Women’s Counsel, Bradford, where she also served as the corresponding secretary and treasurer. Mavrofrides was a fantastic cook, avid reader and talented knitter, crocheter, seamstress and needle-pointer who created countless lasting treasures for her family. She loved to entertain, always happily serving family and friends around her dining room table, especially cherishing the holidays with her loved ones.

She was the wife of the late Angelo Mavrofrides ,who died in 2006, and her survivors include a daughter, Evelyn Wrobel and her husband Joseph; son, Dennis Mavrofrides; two granddaughters, Christine Wrobel Keefe and her husband Derek, and Katherine Wrobel Blitzblau and her husband Seth; two great granddaughters, Amelia and Samantha Keefe; great grandson, Matthew Blitzblau; and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister-in-law of Myron Woodman, Beverly Mavrofrides, Zine Ecker and Vita Vlasich. Mavrofrides was the sister of the late Arthur Demiris, Athena Mancusi, Francis Woodman and Beatrice Demiris.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral Thursday, May 28, at 11 a.m., in Holy Apostles Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154-156 Winter St., Haverhill. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Homes, Haverhill and Bradford.
