Area communities will be remembering veterans Monday as Memorial Day is observed.
Lorraine Post 29 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) will have its annual parade, beginning at 10:30 a.m. The parade follows Main Street and stops at Haverhill police station’s police officers memorial before conclysing with ceremonies at Linwood Cemetery, Mill Street.
Methuen’s Memorial Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. outside the American Legion Post 122, 200 Broadway. The parade forms at 9:30 a.m. and includes all active duty service members, reservists, National Guard and veterans who can participate.
“This is an annual event that pays homage to the men and women who have made great sacrifices for our freedom,” said Methuen Mayor Stephen N. Zanni.
Andover observes Memorial Day with ceremonies beginning at 7 a.m. at West Parish Cemetery, followed by St. Augustine’s Cemetery and Spring Grove. The parade follows at 10 a.m. and a collation takes place at Doherty Middle School cafeteria at 11:30. In the event of heavy rain, all observances will take place inside the World War I Memorial Auditorium.
Plaistow’s Memorial Day parade begins at 10 a.m., at the Pollard School, while Sandown, N.H., begins lining up its parade at noon, at the Sandown Depot. Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Major, will recall the loss of a Sandown aviator who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II. Major will present his story during a service in the Center Cemetery.
