Saying it “will not tolerate street violence and brazen lawlessness in the streets,” Haverhill police joined with federal and state agencies and arrested more than 35 known gang members during the last month.
The latest enforcement round was prompted by an April 14 street fight near 95 Winter St., which was followed by reports of shots fired in the area of Cypress Street and Gilbert Avenue between rival gangs. Arrests were made for crimes such as gun trafficking, attempted murder, trafficking narcotics, malicious destruction of property, disorderly conduct probation and parole violations.
“Although much has been accomplished in a short amount of time, there is much more to do, and there will be many more arrests resulting from ongoing investigations concerning gang members that are involved in illegal activities,” said Captain Robert P. Pistone, police spokesman.
He said police worked with the U.S. Attorney’s office, Essex County District Attorney’s office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, FBI, Drug Enforcement Agency, Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Marshals, Massachusetts Sate Police, Essex County Sheriff’s Department and local probation departments.
“We are also cognizant of the fact that we are a city, and with that comes city crime, and crime will always be present. However, we will not tolerate street violence and brazen lawlessness in the streets,” Pistone said.
Where is the Mayor on this ? Why hasn’t he talked about gangs being a big issue ? Could it be he doesn’t want people to know that his little Hootersville has gangs ? Could it be that he has been sleeping on this issue and it has exploded right under his nose ? The Mayor loooooves to say he hired more cops never admitting that the new cops are only replacing the ones lost retirement or other cities, never really adding to the force.

Who in their right mind would want the job? The city is too poor, getting by on deficit financing bonds, any real change would have to come from amending state law. Who would want those kind of financial handcuffs?
Jimmy doesn’t admit any blame for issues, of course he’s absent minded when he was on City Council and voted in favor of the hospital sale.
