Edgar R. ‘Ed’ Proulx, 75, Recycled Bicycles for Children

Edgar R. “Ed” Proulx, 75, of the Rocks Village section of Haverhill, passed away March 26 at the Tuft’s Healthcare Center in Boston after a short battle with lung cancer.

Born and raised in Amesbury, he was the son of the late, Edgar and Lillian (LaRochelle) Proulx. He attended Amesbury public schools and was a graduate of Haverhill Trade School, class of 1957.

Proulx was a volunteer firefighter, a machinist, and was employed at Westville Homes and Maine Post & Beam,. He once owned and operated E. R. Proulx Builders. Most of all, Proulx was known as the “Bike Man,” During his retirement years, he owned and operated Cycle Re Cycle out of his home. He put smiles on many a child’s face, recycling used bikes to make them affordable. He relished helping others and found immeasurable reward by the gift of giving.

He leaves his beloved wife of 32 years, B. Bernadette (Cawneen) Proulx; four sons, Gary E. Proulx and his wife, Julie, of Seabrook, N.H., Michael A. Proulx and his wife, Amanda, of Sterling, Kenneth J. Proulx and his wife, Sherry, of Attleboro, and Ryan K. Denham and his wife, Alyson, of, Lawrence; three daughters, Michele J. Proulx and her significant other, Russell Cossar, of Salisbury, Lisa M. DesRoche, and her husband, Darren, of Amesbury, and Heather M. Proulx and her husband, Adam Dore, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and 17 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, David R. Proulx and his wife, Susan, of Merrimack, N.H., two sisters, Bernadette F. Samoisette, of Loomis, Calif., and Elizabeth M. Allsopp, of Amesbury, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Armand A. Proulx.

Friends and family are invited to call Monday evening from 5 to 8 at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. Haverhill. Funeral services will begin Tuesday morning at 10 from the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 11 in St. James Church, Winter St. Haverhill.
