Community Action Receives $1.3 Million 50th Birthday Gift

Community Action Inc. is  celebrating its 50th year in Haverhill with a $1.3 million federal grant.

The non-profit organization was recently awarded a $1.3 million Early Head Start-Child Care Partnership grant by The White House Summit on Early Education. The group, established in 1965, provides opportunities and resources for low income families to overcome poverty.

This announcement was a welcome surprise, and birthday gift of sorts, for the staff of the agency that applied for the grant during August, 2014. Head Start will partner with the YMCA of the North Shore and the International Child Care in Haverhill’s infant and toddlers programs.

“This grant will empower Community Action Inc. Head Start to build on long-standing community relations and work with providers to address the desperate need for high quality care for infants and toddlers in Haverhill. We look forward to strengthening these partnerships and continuing to lay a good foundation for success for our community’s youngest children” said Executive Director John Cuneo.

The benefits this grant will provide include new staff and development opportunities for the teachers. June 1 is the expected date this partnership will be fully operational.
