Upper Hilldale Farm Land May Be Used for Solar Farm

A plan for a second Hilldale Avenue solar farm goes before Haverhill city councilors tonight.

Councilors are merely acknowledging the conversion of the land from agricultural to non-farm use.

The land at 1050 Hilldale Ave., near Saint Joseph Cemetery at the Atkinson, N.H., has been used for farming and receives reduced property tax bills because of its agricultural status. Dixieland, LLC, operated by trustee Rose M. Jackson of Wilmington, would use 16 acres of the 93.4 acre parcel for a solar farm.

Under agricultural preservation laws, Haverhill has a right to purchase the land before it may be converted for non-farm uses. The city declined, but will receive $18,300 in “rollback” back taxes, said city Assessor Stephen C. Gullo.

A solar farm has been in place for several years at lot owned by National Grid on Hilldale Avenue near Cashman’s Field.

The Haverhill city council meets at 7 p.m., Tuesday, in council chambers at Haverhill City Hall.
