Richard A. Quimby, 85, Korean War Veteran

Richard A. Quimby, 85, of Groveland and former longtime Haverhill resident, died Thursday, Feb. 19, at Holy Family Hospital, Methuen.

He was born in Haverhill, Feb. 23, 1929, son of the late Treffle and Dorothea (Welch) Quimby. Educated in the Haverhill school system, he graduated from Haverhill High School, class of 1948. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Science Industrial Technology from Northeastern University. During the Korean War he served with the United States Navy, stationed in Italy. He was employed as a Senior Engineer at the former Lucent Technologies from where he retired in 1989. An avid chess player, Quimby won several tournaments in the greater Boston area.

His survivors include his wife of 61 years, Doris (Greenwood) Quimby of Groveland; a son, Scott J. Quimby and his wife Jane of Ward Hill; four daughters, Melissa J. Bird of Hampton, N.H., Alison J. Ward and her husband David of Falmouth, Elizabeth A. Quimby of Haverhill, and Sara L. Quimby of Newburyport; two grandchildren, Heather Miller and her husband Christopher and Liam M. Bird; and two great grandchildren, Emily and Zachary Miller. Quimby was also the brother of the late Ann H. Sargent and Jane F. Deady.

Funeral services were private with burial in Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. Contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
