The Haverhill City Council is set to revisit a request for a special permit to allow used cars sales at a garage near the intersection of East Broadway and Groveland Street.

The request from Devon Tucker, doing business as Ideal Service Center, is to allow a 10-car sales lot at 7-9 East Broadway. The council postponed action Jan. 20 and sent the request  to the zoning Board of Appeals, as recommended by Building Inspector Richard Osborne. Last week that panel voted four to one in favor of allowing used car sales on property zoned for a commercial motor vehicle repair service station. The property is designated as a “CN zoning district.”

In a letter to the council last month, Haverhill Police Chief Alan R. DeNaro said, in his opinion, increasing commercial use of the property “will negatively impact the neighborhood as a whole.”

Also on the council agenda, a vote is expected on a proposed salary ordinance under a tentative collective bargaining agreement for the city’s water purification group with the Teamsters union. The agreement, retroactive to July 1, 2012, provides 1.5 percent salary increases in fiscal 2013 and 2014.

The Haverhill City Council meets at 7 p.m., Tuesday, in council chambers at Haverhill City Hall.
