Mayor’s Chief Van Dam May Learn Tonight About Saugus Job

David S. Van Dam, chief of staff for Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini, and Plaistow, N.H. Town Manager Sean Fitzgerald may find out tonight whether either will be named to the vacant job of Saugus town manager.

Van Dam, of Swampscott, and Fitzgerald, of Peabody, are finalists for the position to succeed former Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree. Another finalists is former North Andover Town Manager Mark Rees. Saugus selectmen interviewed the finalists earlier this month.

“Selectmen are meeting tonight to discuss the candidates, see if they want to call anyone back, or they might be ready to make a decision.” Said Wendy Reed, clerk for the board of selectmen.

Van Dam has served as Fiorentini’s chief of staff since 2011 and previously served as a selectmen in his hometown. He could not be reached at deadline. Fitzgerald was a former chief of staff to Peabody Mayor Michael Bonfanti. Rees resigned as Portland, Maine, town manager last October.

The Saugus town manager’s position has been vacant since October, Reed said.

  1. That’s tough competition to go up against since Van Dam doesn’t seem to have any managerial experience. I’m surprised he is a finalist. Maybe a few well placed phone calls helped ? Lol
