The Merrimack Valley getting its third blast of the white stuff in one week, and some local schools, including Haverhill Public Schools, have cancelled classes for yet another snow day.
“The snow will be of a fluffy and light variety due to the cold temperatures that will persist throughout the duration of the storm. This storm looks to be relatively progressive so it won’t be as intense or long lasting as last Tuesday’s system. Therefore given the guidance I am receiving there will be no school in Haverhill Monday. That puts us at a closing date of June 22, 2015,” Haverhill Superintendent of Schools James F. Scully said in a statement Sunday evening.
Other area public schools cancelling classes include Whittier Regional Technical High School, Pentucket Regional school district, Methuen Public Schools, Andover Public Schools and Offices will be closed on Monday. All afterschool and evening activities, including athletic/fine arts practices for Monday are also cancelled in Andover Public Schools.
Also Northern Essex Community College announced on its newsroom web page it is closed all day Monday due to the weather. All classes and events are cancelled and college offices are closed.
As for local government offices, Methuen City Hall and Andover town offices are closed Monday due to the weather. Plaistow, N.H. Town Hall will have a delayed opening at 10 a.m., Monday.
In Haverhill, the city has declared a snow emergency effective at 6 a.m., Monday. and continuing until 6 a.m., Tuesday, according to Mayor James J. Fiorentini. He also asks residents to make every effort to keep cars off the street.
“This is a ‘snow emergency’ not an ‘extreme snow emergency.’ That means that if you live downtown or on one of the snow emergency routes you must remove your car from the street. In other areas it is voluntary.”
“If you must park on the street, park on the even side of the street,” Fiorentini said.
“You may, once again, use the school lots so long as the cars are removed no later than 6 p.m., Monday evening so we can clean the lots. We are intending to have school on Tuesday if at all possible. If you park in the school lot, kindly park your car on the perimeter if possible so that we can begin cleaning the interior of the lot,” Fiorentini said.
Also, no trash and recycling pick up in Haverhill on Monday. Collection will resume on Tuesday and no other collection days will be affected, according to the Haverhill Division of Public Works. Those with questions are asked to call (978) 420-3817.
“We understand the difficulties that many people have particularly in the inner part of the city where there is still a lot of snow. We will begin snow removal on Tuesday. This is a 2 to 3 week process. If you have an elderly neighbor, please remember to look in on them to make certain they are safe.” Fiorentini said.
Mayor Fiorentini also asks if you have neighbors with no off-street parking, consider offering them a place to park in order to help them and help plows clear the streets.
In Methuen, a Winter Parking Ban will be in effect from 10 p.m., tonight until 10 a.m., Tuesday. Methuen Police ask to not park on any public way.
“The parking ban will be enforced and vehicles will be towed by the DPW if they are impeding snow removal operations. Residents may park in the Park and Ride on Pelham St. as well as the municipal parking lot on Lawrence St. across from the Methuen Public Schools Administration building,” a Methuen Police spokesperson said.
Methuen Mayor Stephen N. Zanni announced the Methuen Police Emergency Operations Center is open for storm-related calls and information. The EOC number is (978) 382-3360. For all emergencies in Methuen, call 911.

In Andover, according to police, an overnight parking-ban is still in effect until further notice (9 p.m. to 6 a.m.). Andover DPW also announced recycling and trash pickup to be delayed by one day all week due to weather.
