Lionel E. Huberdeau, 94, World War II Veteran, Postal Worker

Lionel E. Huberdeau, 94, formerly of Clement Court and Blaisdell Street, died Thursday, Jan. 29.

Born, raised and educated in Haverhill, and son of the late John and Antoinette (Girard) Huberdeau, he attended Saint Joseph School and was a member of the Haverhill High School Class of 1937.

One of six brothers who joined the service during World War II, Huberdeau served as a technical sergeant and second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and was a recipient of the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. During the course of the war, three brothers were serving in the Pacific Theatre simultaneously as three brothers were stationed in the European Theatre.

Employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years, he began his career in the Railway Mail Service and later as a letter carrier until his retirement from the Haverhill branch in 1982.

A longtime active and supportive member of All Saints Parish and the former Saint Joseph Parish, Huberdeau was also a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and the Hannah Duston Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans, and a former member of the Franco-American War Veterans, The VFW, and The American Legion.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he most enjoyed the time he spent with his family. He also enjoyed gardening and was a master jigsaw puzzle enthusiast.

The husband of the late Bernadette (Fontaine) Huberdeau, who died in 2012, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Robert Denoncour of Haverhill and Carol and Paul Daniel of East Hampstead, N.H., his brother Gerard Huberdeau of Haverhill, four grandchildren, Andrew Denoncour of Haverhill, Shawn Denoncour and his wife Kristen of Shirley, Michael Daniel and his wife Alexia of Dracut, and Ashley Fitzpatrick and her husband Patrick of Ashburn,Virg., five great-grandchildren, Jayson and Tyler Denoncour, Connor and Hannah Daniel and Norah Fitzpatrick, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, George, Armand, Roland and Delphis Huberdeau and a sister Annette Brunelle.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Haverhill Crossings for the kindness and care extended to Huberdeau and Beacon Hospice for the wonderful care extended to Huberdeau during his final illness.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Life Celebration to be held Sunday, Feb. 1, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, 47 Broadway, Haverhill. His funeral will begin Monday at 10 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 in All Saints Church, 120 Bellevue Avenue, Haverhill. Burial will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
